Dear Michal Mann,
how come you ruined your own film?
I saw
Public Enemies yesterday and I have to tell you, that I was really curious about. Not only Marion Cotillard and Johnny Depp, whom I adore both, but also a great story to tell. Circumstances couldn't be much better for you. I was prepared:-)
But then.... I'm honest with you. I thought about leaving the cinema in the middle of the movie. Let me try to explain it. .... I don't know where to start.
First of all, the look was awful! Shooting in HD is okay, but PLEASE color-correct your film or use filters. I don't wanna see every acne scar on an actors face. Nor do I wanna have the feeling that you shot all the action scenes with a normal DV-Cam. Didn't you recognize this Homevideo-Feeling while editing? Better; on set? Watching the running and shooting on screen, I waited the entire time for the "CUT! Thanx guys, that was fantastic. So, time for Lunch - shooting again at 2p.m.. Bank robbery Number 4."
Nevertheless, I tried to follow, to get back into the movie. And I failed. Thinking about, I found some reasons:
1) The Look.
2) You created strong, intimate moments, mostly the scenes between Marion & Johnny or between Johnny and another person. And destroyed them immediately by using these ugly, awful cuts or hurriying up to the next scene or with this freaking HD-Look. WHY?
3) Johnny. We both know, he's our man. I loooove him! He's a great actor. And it's really easy to make him good & cool looking in a movie. But not for THE ENTIRE TIME! That's not enough!
4) The characters. I didn't care much about all these guys dying. They were unknown faces to me. Sad, 'cause the moment between Dillinger and his best friend dying could have been really touching. Wasn't.
5) The Sound.
6) Christian Bale. Two words: Not interesting. I did understand what character you wanted to create - but I didn't get his need, his goals or something else.
But I'm not completely frustrated. I liked:
1) Marion. I think Marion Cotillard proved once more what a great actress she is. I was fascinated! She's talking with her eyes, so into the moment, you hardly can elude her intenseness. I loved her torture scene... which actress can play it like that, half of her face hidden behind her hair, without perfect light. Great! Or her scene with the old agent when he's telling her Dillingers last words. Moving.
2) The old agent.
3) The costumes! I never saw a 3 Dollar dress looking that hot:-)
4) The Sets & the Props!
5) Hair&Make up. God - fantastic!
So, please. Don't take my letter personal. I'm pretty sure a lot of people like it the way it is. But I think you have the right to know what others are thinking about.
Expecting your next movie.
Sincerely,
Minou
Sorry guys, Part two is missing:
